Jeremiah Donovan
Donovan's restaurant, located in South Norwalk, CT, sits comfortably on the corner of Washington and Water Street in the historic section of South Norwalk. Since 1889 the restaurant in Norwalk is one of the area's favorite place to meet old friends and make new ones and has been serving the public within its charming restaurant and authentic saloon ambiance. A brief exception was the Prohibition Era when it served as the neighborhood A & P. Rumor has it that bootleg booze was available in the back room. Jeremiah Donovan's career took him from successful saloon keeper to distinguished member of the U.S. House of Representatives, including a stint as Mayor of Norwalk from 1917-1921 on his way up the political ladder. Donovan's was a second home to local Politicians during its colorful history, including a number of presidential candidates "taking a break" while making their stomp through New England.
The collection of vintage prizefighter pictures belonged to "Battling Bat Kunz", a regional champ who owned the bar for a couple of decades and catered to ring personalities throughout his tenure. Current owner, Richie Ball restored the bar in 1979 to its original Victorian style. At that time Washington Street was a far cry from its currently revitalized character and activity. Richie welcomes you to Donovan's Restaurant, a South Norwalk, CT tradition since 1889.
